"Always at Home" Gold Charm

THE STORY:

This little snail and the French phrase "Toujours Chez Moi" was originally etched in the bottom of a Victorian intaglio seal from the late 1800s–a time when written correspondence was the main form of long distance communication. The French motto “Toujours Chez Moi” translates to “Always at Home” in English. The phrase could signify many things, such as self assurance and finding "home" in many places, people, or even yourself.

We've created a gold impression of our original limited edition silver charm series. Now, they're available in solid 10k and 14k gold.

Each charm measures approximately 0.5–0.75" in width and is truly one of a kind, with slight variations in shape and character. Every piece includes a simple attached bail and is a direct impression taken from an antique seal dating to the late 1800s. Please note that any irregularities in the image or lettering are a reflection of the original antiquity and part of the charm’s unique history. The History of Intaglio Seals

With letters the main form of correspondence prior to the 1900s, intaglio seals were used to seal papers and documents with wax to ensure they remained unopened until it reached its intended recipient. These seals often held personal initials, family crests, heraldry, and other meaningful imagery. Owning a desk seal was a necessity for the middle and upper classes, but those who were too poor to afford such a luxury or were illiterate relied on a local scribe. These scribes would not only dictate messages, but the sender would choose from their assortment of seals as a preview to the message inside their letter.
