The History:

  • Victorian gold filled double pane Lorgnette glasses featuring scrollwork details. This piece opens by pulling down the center sphere on the handle.
  • They measure at just under 3.75" when folded, and at 5.75" when opened. Each lens measures 1.5" in length and just over 1" in height. This Lorgnette was originally made and sourced in England.

*This piece is pictured on a 30" modern gold filled chain but can be purchased with or without the chain.

THE HISTORY

Lorgnette Glasses originated in the 17th Century for use at the opera. Derived from the French word lorgner - meaning "to ogle," high society ladies controversially used their lorgnettes to spy stealthily on their adversaries or gentlemen they fancied in public. In the 19th Century, the lorgnette served as a more practical vision aid rather than an instrument of jealous leering.
