Dove + Ouroboros Necklace
This one-of-a-kind necklace is composed of:
- Victorian, gold filled watch fob and chain from the late 1800s. The pocket watch fob features a dove sitting atop an ouroboros snake all etched in a carnelian stone. This piece was originally made and sourced in England.
- This necklace measures a standard 18” on an antique gold filled chain with an antique swivel clasp closure. The pendant measures 1.25" in height and is just under 1" in its widest.
The History:
The ouroboros is a circular symbol that depicts a snake or dragon devouring its own tail and that is used especially to represent the eternal cycle of destruction and rebirth. Serpent motifs, including the ouroboros, surged during the Victorian era because Queen Victoria liked snake jewelry and, in fact, received a green enamel snake ring from Prince Albert.
The addition of the dove alongside the ouroboros represents renewal and creation in the duality of the cycle of life. The dove is meant to instill a sense of hope that balances the loss of death and natural entropy.
