The History
The Freemason's Square and Compass Symbol, derived from the working tools of medieval stonemason guilds, represents some of the core tenants of Freemasonry. Used to form perfect angles, the builder's square symbolizes a life of integrity. The compass, used to render perfect circles, represents restraint and boundaries. Together these symbols honor a way of life that values stability through good judgement and balance.
This particular locket encompasses the additional symbolic element of the fleur-de-lis. As a long debated stylized depiction of either a lily or an iris, the fleur-de-lis represents purity and has been a heraldic symbol of French and other European ancestries in coats of arms.
